Abstract:

Includes numerous cartes de visite of Japanese dignitaries and consular staff from Europe and America, scenes in Japan and China (including town views, antiquities, etc.), and portraits of Chinese people.
approximately 79 photographs. Chiefly cartes de visite portraits and some cabinet cards : consular associates in China (1869-1876), Japanese dignitaries (1870s?), various portraits of friends and associates, and some rural scenery or outing group photographs, probably circa 1885-1895 in California. Some portraits were taken in Europe, Lima, Washington DC, and San Francisco. Many are unidentified, but many bear surnames. Included are (folder 1:) Bismarck, the German Consul in China (folder 2:) Emperor Meiji and Empress Haruko of Japan and many named Japanese officials such as Kawaji, Ito, Sameshima, Kawajo, Arisugawara, Kusumoto, Yamagata, Kuroda, Saigo, Soeshima, Tanaka, Yamada, Sanyo, Inouye, Iwakura, Arinora Mori and family, Nabeshima, (young) Tokugawa, and Ohkubo. Some portraits are by Uchida Kuichi. (folder 5:) Dr. Yamei Kin (first Chinese woman to receive M.D. in the United States), and Peruvian ambassador Juan Federico Elmore.
-- "Concession Anglaise a Han-Kew (Vue de Chine)" -- and a portrait of Li Hung Chang. Some attributed, by a researcher, to photographers Paul Champion (1865) and L.F. Fisler (1874). Items 1-4 have the same mount and label style, but "Adolphe LeGoupy" is embossed only on mount 1. The caption on no. 5 is hand written.
12 photographic prints. Portraits and views of China and Japan(?), apparently in the 1860s & 1870s. Views include buildings, antiquities, a harbor view, etc.
3 cartes de visite views: road toward bridge and building (China?), group of westerners at foot of large Buddha, an outdoor sculpture captioned on verso: "no.24 Bronze instrument Peking Observatory".
Panoramic albumen photoprint mounted on linen of a Chinese city (Zhenjiang?) on a river or harbor, circa 1870? Very poor condition.
Album of cartes de visite photographs of Japanese and Chinese individuals, some identified persons, some illustrative of social classes. Included are some views of Japan. Photos 1-96 and 146-152 removed from album. Sleeved and housed separately (PIC). (Numbers assigned to each image slot in album, regardless of whether an image was present, therefore not all numbers in sequence were used.)
Album of 36 landscapes, city views, group portraits, and views of temples, pagodas, tombs, consulates, and other buildings mainly in Shanghai, Ching Kiang (Zhenjiang), Nanking (Nanjing), Ningpo (Ningbo), Su chow (Suzhou), Hang Chou Foo [Hangzhou], and Hankow [Hankou], China circa 1865-1875. A label of photographer Sing Kwa, Shanghai is inside front cover. Ningpo region views attributed to Major James C. Watson. Several photographs in different formats added at beginning and end, probably by different photographers. These added photographs are dated 1869 and 1873.
Album of views of Japan, circa 1870-1885? Some or all views attributed to Uchida Kuichi. These would pre-date photographer's 1875 death, but may have been printed later in the 19th century.
